Why YOU should be working your BUTT off…..

Hope you have had a good week and are keeping on track with your health & fitness goals.

It’s that time of the year when we are probably exposing a little more of ourselves than in winter so is often peak time for people wanting to get in shape.

I’ve talked about the core and abdominals over the last few weeks but one of my favourite workouts has to be legs and butt.

Here are my top 5 reasons for getting off my butt and keeping moving!

# Weak glutes or bum muscles can wreak havoc on your back, hips and knees, so building a strong bottom should be a top priority. Collectively there are 3 muscles which form the “glutes” , gluteus maximus, medius & minimus. These three muscles help us to extend our hips (move the leg backwards); abduct our hips (take the leg out to the side) and rotate our hip joints internally and externally along with stabilizing the pelvis & core to support the hip area. When you run, the maximus drives you forward; while the smaller medius and minimus muscles provide balance and control for your legs, which help keep your hips, knees and ankles aligned.

# We are designed to move, run, walk, climb etc and our glutes are the power horses for these activities. If you habitually spend long periods of time seated these muscles become stretched and weak whilst the hip flexors become short and tight resulting in the pelvis tilting forward, the glutes not firing up properly and a whole host of niggling injuries.

# Any activity, sporting or just daily living is easier and more efficient with a fully functioning set of butt muscles. Cycling, skiing, walking/running, bending and lifting, climbing stairs, walking up hills and general balance all involve our glutes.

# They are big!! As the largest muscle (glute maximus) in the body they require a lot of energy so when you work out they burn serious amounts of body fat.

# A toned shapely butt will bring out the best of those skinny jeans. Strength training exercises such as squats and lunges as those of you know who come to classes will know, are among my favourites! No equipment needed initially, your body weight is resistance enough.

If you are unsure of where to start I can help by designing and guiding you through a strength training programme that you can take away and complete at home or alternatively work through with me.
Or why not join in any of our shapeshifter workouts before the summer holidays are upon us, not long left now 🙂 !

Have a Happy, healthy and active week and don’t forget
